About Us – Rhiza UK

Who we are

Rhiza UK (charity number: 1190525) is a registered charity, founded in 2020. Our goal is to support the work of Rhiza in South Africa and countries in East Africa, including Rwanda, Burundi, Kenya. The goal of Rhiza International is to uplift township communities through five core areas: education, healthcare, skills development, entrepreneurship, and community well-being. The focus of all projects is to uplift communities sustainably, with a strategy focused on implementing models that are scalable and in no need of continuous funding, but rather an initial investment. Our projects focus on generating a sustainable income through employment or self-employment. Rhiza UK monitors and exercises control to make sure that grants are spent according to agreed charitable purposes.

Rhiza UK is registered with the Charities Commission, registration number 1190525. We are a small charity with revenue under £250,000.

Rhiza History

Rhiza was founded in 2010 in the Netherlands as a holistic community development organisation. The driving force behind this foundation is Alef Meulenberg. After making several trips to underserved communities in Southern and East Africa, in particular the enormous inequality in South Africa affected him so much that he decided to take action and founded Rhiza, which stands for equality, sustainability, and local empowerment!
